NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
The vast majority of individuals with a substance use disorder in the U.S. are not receiving treatment. 18% of adults in the U.S. had a substance use disorder in the past year. Of them, 77% did not receive treatment.
More than 5% of the U.S. adult population (12.8 million people) reported experiencing serious thoughts of suicide. After slight decreases in suicide deaths in 2019 and 2020, the number of individuals who died by suicide in 2022 was the highest number ever recorded in the U.S.
23% of adults experienced a mental illness in the past year, equivalent to nearly 60 million Americans.
1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. Over half of them – nearly 3 million youth - did not receive treatment. Of those who did receive treatment, only 65% said it helped them.
9% of youth in the U.S. had a substance use disorder in the past year. Youth were more likely to struggle with drugs than alcohol - 3% had an alcohol use disorder in the past year, while 7% had a drug use disorder.
60.5% of youth in the U.S. are flourishing, which is associated with school engagement and other positive outcomes for youth. The percentage of youth who were flourishing was highest in Georgia, Illinois, and Hawaii.

I have a background in psychology and a deep understanding of human behavior and motivation. I believe that true change comes not just from setting goals, but from understanding the underlying beliefs and patterns that may be holding us back. I also bring a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to every coaching session.
Goal: Spend 5 minutes in mindful breathing.
Action: Sit quietly and focus on your breath for 5 minutes. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath.
Measure: Set a timer for 5 minutes. Note how you feel before and after.
Goal: Engage in at least 20 minutes of physical activity.
Action: Choose an activity you enjoy, walking, stretching, yoga, dancing, etc.
Measure: Track your time and effort. Write down how you felt before and after the activity.
Goal: Drink 8 glasses of water and eat 3 balanced meals.
Action: Keep track of your water intake. Aim for balanced meals with protein, veggies, and whole grains.
Measure: Check off each glass of water and meal throughout the day.
Goal: Connect with someone you care about for at least 15 minutes.
Action: Call, text, or video chat with a friend or family member.
Measure: Record the duration and note how you felt after the interaction.
Goal: Complete one small task that you’ve been putting off.
Action: Choose a task (e.g., organizing a drawer, responding to an email) and complete it.
Measure: Reflect on how good it feels to accomplish something small.
Goal: Take a 30-minute break for self-care.
Action: Do something relaxing—read, take a bath, meditate, or nap.
Measure: Track your time. How do you feel afterward? Notice any reduction in stress levels.
